Not necessarily. If you're concerned, I suggest seeing a hair loss expert to evaluate and go over your condition and provide you information about your best treatment options. There are great non-invasive options like PRP/progesterone and/or hair transplantation. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer
While the primary baldness gene is on the X chromosome, which men get only from their mothers, other factors are also in play. The hereditary factor is slightly more dominant on the woman's side, but research suggests that men who have a bald father are more likely to develop male pattern baldness than those who don't.
If I had a crystal ball, my job would be much easier. The genetics of hair loss are not as straight forward as the color of your eyes. It is safe to say if there are mostly bald men in your family on both sides, chances are you will have some degree of baldness. If fewer members of your family are bald then your chance is less but it is never zero. Also, the onset of baldness can vary as well as the severity throughout generations. Male pattern hair loss occurs from approximately age 18-65 years old. After that, there are mostly age related changes that cause thinning. Only time will tell what your pattern will be.
About 50% of men and 25% of women inherit a particular gene from their parents that makes them sensitive to DHT. This sensitivity varies in age from when it starts to affect you, however once it does your hair will start to miniaturize and you will gradually bald over about 15 years. Once it starts you will lose about 10 hairs per day permanently so its a good idea to see a hair loss specialist as soon as you can. A good hair loss specialist will be able to review your bloodwork and scalp microscopically to determine whether you have inherited the baldness gene or not.
Balding can be inherited from any person in the family on either side and the balding genes can be seen multiple generations back may not have expressed itself despite being passed down through a generation or more
