Laser vein treatment or closure heats the vein itself or the tissue around the vein to cause the blood in the vein to dissolve and clot and the vein wall then dissolves over time from the heat injury. The clot that forms in the treated vein is doctor induced and is normal and will resolve over several weeks and will not travel anywhere. Occasionally, a clot can form at the top end of the treated vein beyond the treated vein. This is called Heat Induced Thrombosis and occurs in less than 2% of treated veins and , in my experience, significantly less than that. This clot is usually self absorbing within one to two weeks but occasionally, it may need to be treated with blood thinners until it resolves.
Any vein procedure (on superficial veins) can result in deep vein thrombosis but the likelihood is small and scans are done days after each elective procedure to exclude this likelihood and to treat deep vein clots if they are diagnosed.
