Her doctor was probably prescribing a home formulation of buffered saline solution. The idea would be to wash out pollutants inside the nose and decrease inflammation prior to surgery. Not all nose surgeons have the same protocol pre or postoperatively so I would suggest that she stick with the recommendations of her surgeon. Nasal saline solution is often helpful and extremely rarely harmful.
