Neither is 'better' than the other, they each have their own particular cases where one is a better fit than the other. Finasteride is more suited for preventing hair loss, while Minoxidil/Rogaine is more suited for stimulating hair growth/thickness. Both have the possibility of side effects but many patients don't ever experience them.

Finasteride typically has worse side effects than Minoxidil. Minoxidil is more challenging to remain compliant with due to frequency of use and constantly applying to the hair. They both work well and work better when used together.
