There is alot of myths and poor understanding of the hair shedding condition known as chronic telogen effluvium. It is fundamentally a hair shedding condition and can stop eventually. It is what we call a self limited condition. By definition, if a condition is self limited - one need not use a treatment for the condition life long. So the answer your question - if you truly have CTE, your hair does not become dependent in the drug. Please see a specialist if you are not sure. CTE is frequently misdiagnosed.

I believe that minoxidil is often prescribed for CTE because there is little that can be done and minoxidil does often grown some additional hair, albeit small hairs most of the time
