A few things about chin and jaw projection:While an excessively wide jaw or projecting chin can give me a masculine look, they also imply a strong sense of confidence. This is true for both men and women. It is a much better look than a meager look of the weak chin and thin, long face.Jaw reduction using Botox works by weakening the masseter muscle. As the muscle weakens, it shrinks just like any muscle on your body that gets no exercise. It will, however, only decrease the width of the jaw over the masseter, which is about an inch wide and sits just in front of the angle of the jaw.If you clinch your teeth back-and-forth, you can feel the muscle contract on the back of your jaw.As such, there are some limitations with the use of Botox. If the area of the masseter is the widest part, then Botox is more effective. If the corner of the jaw, the bony part, is the widest part, then Botox is less effective.Another major disadvantage is, of course, that Botox only lasts a few months. It also requires relatively high doses of Botox, making it a fairly expensive process. When Botox treatments are done back-to-back and patients are treated before the muscle has a chance to get activated, the results are longer lasting between treatments.Chin projection or anything in front of the masseter muscle cannot be treated with Botox. While surgery may seem tempting because it gives a permanent result, it is also a quite complex procedure.I would venture to say the great majority of plastic surgeons are not skilled at this procedure.Because this treatment is very popular among Asians, especially Koreans, many Korean plastic surgeons are particularly talented in this type of procedure. I'm sure there are many plastic surgeons or even oral surgeons who have experience and do excellent work with these type of procedures. As with any surgery, it is critical you find someone who has ample experience and true talents. In your case, this may be slightly more difficult to find, so please do your homework and look long and hard for the right person should you choose surgery. After this quite lengthy response, the bottom line for you is definitely try Botox first.Secondly, you have a very balanced, attractive face. I do not disagree with your concerns. However, in my aesthetic opinion, it is not enough to stand out as a deficit or something other people's eyes are drawn to as a deficit. If you were a family member, I would most likely try to talk you out of any procedure.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.
