Question

Do you believe they really work or will scars heal a certain way regardless of what you put on it? I am 10 weeks post op and my scar has gotten redder and I hear that at some point this is normal. I would like to know if spending the money is worth it or time will get me the same results and that silicon sheets/gel just hastens the healing? silicone scar sheets can be very expensive , up to $180/box or $30/ tinier weenie tube of silicone gel.

While your body does a great job healing scars on its own, you can also help by keeping the scars out of the sun. Also, we usually recommend silicone sheeting and dermatix silicone gel. These two products have helped our patients improve the appearance of their scar nicely. The key is to use these products only after the wound has closed, and to apply them to clean skin. You will find studies that suggest that they work and others that suggest that there is no difference in normal (non-hypertrophic or keliod) scars.   That being said, I do suggest that my patients use it, as most patients would like that least visible scar possible and silicone gel sheets seem to be the best thing on the market right now for scar therapy. It is always best to follow the advice of your plastic surgeon.

You will find different surgeons have different opinions on the advantages of silicone treatment for scars. I find that my patients respond very well to silicone sheeting, and I have it available to them after their incision has healed. You should check with your surgeon to see if it is appropriate for you, and perhaps it is available at your surgeons office. Good luck.

It does not matter which silicone sheets you use as long as you are using them. You need to place them for about 12 hrs a day and they should be used a minimum of 3 months. Silicone sheets have been shown in the scar literature to make a difference with how scars heal. There are variables that we can not control such as the genetics of the patient and how their own makeup will affect scarring but sheeting should definitely help.
