How long do you have to wear the very tight bandage like garment?

How long you need compression after a cosmetic surgery depends on the type of surgery, the specific technique used and how much swelling you develop post-op.  The answer can vary significantly from one patient to another--in general, if it is liposuction that you have had, the minimal length of time to wear compression would be about 3 weeks, and longer if the skin tone in the area is poor or swelling is excessive.  After a tummy tuck the binder garment is usually worn for 4-6 weeks to reduce swelling and prevent fluid collections.  Immediately after surgery and early in your recovery period post-op it is important to keep the compression on consistently.  As you get further out, you can leave it off for short periods of time without adverse consequences.  Be sure to ask your surgeon when it is okay to shower/get wet.  Typically it is recommended that showering/getting wet should not take place until 24 hours after drains have been removed.  (This is recommended to limit the risk of infection.)  If there are no drains, it still is smart to wait 24-48 hours after surgery to shower or get a surgical site wet.  After surgery it is necessary to adjust the compression periodically throughout the day so you don't develop pressure points or folds under the garments.  Also, if the garments are uncomfortable or irritating your skin, you may consider a loose t-shirt or spandex under the garment.  For the most specific answer is always best to contact your surgeon's office, they are familiar with the details your procedure and related recommendations for optimal recovery.   

After liposuction, you can take the compression garment off usually after 48 hrs to shower and take it of daily after that for showering.  Usually you wear it this way for 4-6 weeks.
