Is it a risk that IPL treatments could mask the visual warning signs of skin cancer by reducing the appearance of pigment?

IPL may reduce redness and pigment but will not hide the abnormality of precancer to the trained dermatologist.  There are other signs such as roughness, irregular margins and vascularity that will not disappear with IPL.  As mentioned, IPL can be used in conjunction with Levulan to treat precancerous lesions.

A Dermatologist will be able to tell if anything needs to be medically treated before actually being cosmetically removed. Early detection of skin cancer is key in successful treatment- regular checks on any spots & moles is the best way to prevent & treat. IPL is a great treatment option for hyperpigmentation, redness and sundamage. The skin should be checked prior to treatment and any suspicious lesions should be evaluated my a trained medical professional, usually a dermatologist. 

Nope. This is not a problem. In fact, we use IPL to treat many PREcancerous lesions. If something is actually cancerous, an IPL cannot remove or mask it. Not all pigment is the same.
