Is the new SkinPen superior? Do you recommend micro-needling session with PRP?

Question

I am doing some research on professional micro-needling sessions for just facial rejuvenation. I've found there is a new pen called the SkinPen. Is this new SkinPen really superior? My 2nd question is it worth paying extra (by hundreds of $'s) to combine this procedure with PRP, or would a good growth factor serum be just as beneficial. This is getting confusing!

Hello! We just recently purchased the new SkinPen (After having the Eclipse Micropen) and everything we have heard sounds more beneficial with the SkinPen. This device has 14 needles versus 12 for more micro-channels and better efficacy,  there are safety features on the pen for sanitation, as well as speeding up or slowing down depending on the tissue being treated and you can use one tip for 50 minutes of use without the needles dulling versus 20 minutes. Personally I think this is a great device and so is PRP! The growth factor serums are great, but what is better than your own person platelets being put back into your own skin? It is the one way to make sure you have no reaction or allergy because it is your own blood already.

Hi jschapman6. Microneedling plus PRP is amazing! I do this procedure frequently and my patients love it. They feel that their skin is smoother, glows, and is softer. I frequently combine this with PRP to faster healing & response. I use the Microeclipse microneedling pen and I love it. Good luck. Best, Dr H

The most important factor for skin rejuvenation is actually not the device, its the operator. Sure the technology will always advance- more safety features, more needles (14 in total), better solenoid and needle delivery etc..etc.. If you only have ONE tool, everything look like a target- the same analogy with the ' hammer' and everything looks like a nail. PRP does NOT add to the overall end goal, PRP aids in the healing time. To date, as of early 2019 , there are no clinical trials worth noting in the context of skin rejuvenation. Subjective view points aside. I do use PRP, however ethically inform patients that the goal is quicker recovery times only. So to answer your question- if you are set on the brand of Skin Pen, then go for it.
