I had a buccal fat pad removal 5 days ago, is this normal? (photo)

Please see attached photo for my current state, it is getting worst, it is not this worst for the first 4 days, and the doctor also informed me that on my right cheek a lot of fat has been removed compared to the left one (which is mildly swollen), my concern is that the swollen is upto my chin, its making me paranoid whether this is normal for other doctors aside from my own. And also take note I combined my surgery with double eylid and rhino only this is my main concern.

Thank you for your question.  It is certainly common and expected to have swelling after buccal fat reduction surgery.  Typically, it's akin to have your wisdom teeth removed.  Sometimes it can be more significant.  One has to consider that the swelling could be due to bleeding within the operated area, so it is worthwhile to contact your surgeon to see if he/she would like to assess this in person.  Hope this helps!

Swelling after buccal fat removal is minimal and short in duration in about 90% of the cases. In the remaining 10%, the swelling could be significant, asymmetric and last for several days (eg. 5 days).  Patients with significant swelling of the face post buccal fat removal should contact their surgeon's office to be evaluate in consultation.  A physical exam could help to diagnose the cause of the swelling and implement treatment according to the cause. Evaluations over the phone do not allow to do full evaluation.
