Smart Lipo is a trademark term owned by the Cynosure laser company. Most plastic surgeons, I respect in the field of Liposuction did not use laser assisted Liposuction, or believe it has any significant impact on final results. There are only two variables that determine. The first is the patient’s candidacy for the procedure itself and the second is the skill and experience of the provider. Plastic surgeons have the tools they need to do their work. The difference in outcome is not because they bought a certain brand of Liposuction Equipment. Choosing providers based on what equipment they use is a bit like choosing what mechanic you go to because of their equipment or buying bread from a bakery because they use a certain brand oven. Patients are either a good candidate for Liposuction or they’re not. This is obviously not a black or white issue, but rather a spectrum. Likewise, plastic surgeons are either good at Liposuction or they’re not, and again this to spectrum. I will tell you that the number of plastic surgeons who have mastered liposuction and can deliver predictabl outcomes is in a small minority. There are unfortunately plenty of board-certified plastic surgeons with years of experience, and overall good reputation, but simply are not good at Liposuction or don’t like performing the procedure. Liposuction is somewhat unique, and that it has the greatest variation in outcome based on who does the procedure of all plastic surgery operations in my opinion. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of provider selection. In my opinion, patients should be far more selective than they ever thought necessary when it comes to permanence and irreversible operators like Liposuction. Unfortunately once done incorrectly the procedure leaves people disfigured . Smartlipo by definition includes laser treatment. I suggest having multiple in person, consultations with local board-certified plastic surgeons. Make sure you review charges and fees with the provider if you have any questions. Is there an age consultation as providers to open up your portfolio and show you their entire collection of before and after pictures of previous patient who had similar body characteristics to your own. An experience provider should have no difficulty showing you at least 50 sets a before, and after pictures of commonly performed procedures like liposuction. I recommend patients be more selective delay, everything necessary when it comes to Liposuction, which is far more difficult procedure to perform well than most people think. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
