Had no bowel movement after tummy tuck 1 week ago. Should I go to the emergency room? My stomach is swollen

Thanks for your inquiry,  if you can call your surgeon's office in Miami and speak to them ASAP they should be able to walk you through a plan which may or may not include a visit to to the ER, but at least you will have discussed other options before just going.  Good Luck.  

Constipation due to pain medication following a tummy tuck would not be unusual, but you are probably only taking ibuprofen now.   The change in bowel movements may suggest something else unrelated to a tummy tuck.  Because you are unable to return to your PS, if concerns persist or worsen, maybe your internist can recommend something as simple as an OTC medication for relief.Swelling after a tummy tuck usually lasts 3 to 6 months, but most of the swelling is gone after a few weeks.

Medications given in surgery, change in activity level and diet, and narcotics can slow your normal bowel habits. Even if you can't physically see your surgeon I advise that you call her/him for guidance. You can review the interventions you've tried and determine next steps.

Congratulations on your recent surgery and thank you for sharing your question about your post operative recovery and results after your surgery.  Final results can take 6-12 months for all the swelling to subside.  At our office we actually see all of our surgery patients the very next day after surgery and then again at two weeks and beyond. We enjoy staying closely connected to our patients and enjoy giving the extra attention and service. Your concerns are important to discuss directly with your board certified plastic surgeon.  He or she will appreciate the open communication and will want to help you.
