It is possible to damage the eyes without proper eye protection during laser procedures or even IPL. I use metal eye shields on all patients I'm using lasers on. Wearing protective glasses is not adequate for the patient because of the exact problem you describe. The laser can get under the glasses and still cause eye injury. It is only proper for the operator to use these glasses because they need to see, but they are not perfect. If you were to have an eye issue, it would be an immediate problem. Some lasers can penetrate the eye further than others. The lasers that are attracted to pigment are the more dangerous lasers because they can affect the retina. Lasers that are attracted to water can affect the cornea but not the retina.
