Blood clots can form for various reasons. Some are genetic, some are related to significant medical problems, others are unexplained. A hematologist would be the most knowledgeable specialist to establish what degree of risk you possess for recurrent blood clots. Fatal blood clots have been reported in liposuction done by local anesthesia as well as by general anesthesia.
Liposuction with this history needs clearance by a physician. I suggest a formal consultation to determine what is best. Dr. Emer.
Hello wendy ward,Thanks for your question.Your blood clot risk with smartlipo is higher if you need general anesthesia for your procedure. If the procedure is performed in office with local anesthesia the risk is theoretically less. If you are on chronic anticoagulation, I would speak with both your plastic surgeon and your regular doctor to decide if cosmetic surgery is even safe in your particular situation.Good luck,Dr. Shah
your board certified PS can discuss this with your hematologist. You certainly cannot have smartlipo done if you are on anticoagulants now. However, i am presuming you had them in the past. you need to establish why you got them in the first place. Chances are that if the Smartlpo is done in the office under local anesthesia with just some oral sedation your risks should be very low. the risks are definitely higher if you are put to sleep.if your risk was higher, your PS could put you on Lovenox post op but this should not be necessary if it is done under localdavid berman

I put very few restrictions on any of my liposuction patients, whether I use Smart Liposuction, laser, ultrasound, or power lipo. Time to completely heal may vary with the technique, but since the incisions are small and there is no muscle involved in the procedure, my only restriction is no ...
Yes it is possible to get seromas with Smart Lipo. I am not sure if the incidence is higher with this technology than with traditional liposuction but I believe it is. Normally most anterior thighs are avoided because this area tends to have greater healing problems. With the newer technology ...
