Can one change their size in silicone implants right on the day of surgery?

Yes, you doctor should review the surgical plan with you on the day of surgery.

The size of implant best for you is dictated by your chest wall measurements.  Once we determine that we can choose the profile based on what you want or need to achieve.  If you are seeking a natural look, then the diameter of the implant should be equal to or, more ideally, smaller than the width of your breast. The breast width is a measurement of how wide your breast is at the base, which should be measured at the level of the nipple. Choosing an implant that is smaller in diameter than your breast width will avoid the "side breast" fullness that is often associated with a more artificial appearance.  Other than that, you should choose the implant based on volume, not on the dimensions of the implant. You should choose a board certified plastic surgeon that you trust to help guide you in this decision.  

Silicone will give you a fullness at the top (upper pole fullness).



Silicone implants come pre-filled with a silicone gel and are the softest implant available. They feel more natural, which makes them a good option for women with less natural breast tissue; but they require a larger incision. It may be more difficult to realize if this type of implant has ruptured, so it is important to monitor them with annual follow-up visits. Additionally, because this implant contains a more liquid silicone (less cross-linked), if this implant should rupture, it will leak only into the scar capsule formed around the implant but may cause some discomfort or implant distortion.



Anatomic gummy bear implants might be a good choice to give you volume.



These highly-sought-after, anatomic implants offer a look that more closely resembles the natural silhouette of a breast, and, therefore, are a very attractive option for individuals seeking a natural-looking, aesthetic primary breast augmentation. Compared to other types of silicone gel implants, the silicone in the cohesive gel implant is more cross-linked; therefore, should the implant shell “rupture,” it maintains its shape and silicone does not leak.



During your breast augmentation consultation, you should feel the different types of implants available, and try on various implant sizers in front of a mirror to help you to get an idea of how you will look following the surgery. You should also bring pictures of the look you would like to achieve, as well as a favorite top to wear when trying on implant sizers.

You can change your size the day of surgery if your surgeon has that particular size in stock. Implants can be shipped overnight for an additional charge as well. It's best to give your surgeon as much time as possible to get the implant you want. If I know someone is still trying to decide on size, I have several sizes available the day of surgery. Changing the implant size right before surgery can happen, but your surgery might be postponed if the newly selected size is not stocked by your surgeon. You should let your surgeon know as soon as you can about the change to ensure that they’ll have the implants for you on the day of your surgery.

The simple answer to your question is sure, you can change your size even at the last minute. However, it might not be a good idea. Sizing is an important part of the consultation and pre-op process. It's our chance to "get it right". It's often based on the volume which you desire and the dimensions of your breast and chest. Changing it on a whim might not be in your best interest. Change is always possible, but you have to make sure that the chosen implants are available. Practicality sometimes gets in the way. Talk to your doctor and make sure that you get what fits your needs.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  Assuming your surgeon has additional implant sizes available for your case, or on consignment through a hospital or ambulatory surgery center, you can choose to change your implant size prior to surgery.  I would continue to try and reach your physician to let them know of your intentions, however. 

Firstly, you should make sure you are not sedated before you see your doctor. Changing sizes at this late date will be a decision between you and your doctor. Often, we won't have the right size at our disposal and surgery may need to be put off.

Thanks for your interesting question. In my own practice the answer is likely yes because we keep most implant sizes in stock in our facility, but some surgeons do not. Definitely check with your PS. As a matter of course though I do not recommend changing sizes on surgery day. Nothing is more anxiety provoking than the day of surgery and I feel that it is never a good Idea to change the plan at the last minute. I would personally rather have my patient come in as many times as they like before surgery to try in implant sizers so that there are no decisions to be made on surgery day.Hope this helps

Certainly patients have changed their decision about the size and look they are trying to achieve in the days leading up to surgery.  The day of surgery we review the surgical plan. In my office we have a consignment of multiple implants that makes size changes possible. If a patient's require is for a specific implant shape or profile this could be problematic.

Yes, it is not uncommon for women to make last minute changes to their desired  breast implant sizing before surgery. Some surgeons order the breast implants on a individual case by case basis and therefoe will require a  day or two notice to accommodate changes. Others have a consignment arrangement with the implant company where most all sizes are "in stock" at all times, therefore avoiding the need of advanced notice. Certainly notify your surgeon of any sizing changes as soon as they arise. If  your surgery is on a Monday and your sizing goals change the weekend before, I suggest you try to contact the "on call" surgeon so as to create a heads up situation for an expected  Monday 7 am start time!
