Large and firm "lump" in lower abdomen 11 days post tumescent lipo, is this normal?

I had tumescent liposuction on my upper/lower abdomen and flanks 11 days ago. I realize it's very early in the healing process however when I saw my PS 3 days after my procedure he stated that I was more swollen than he would expect. I currently have a lot of swelling, to the point you can't tell the procedure was completed. With that being said my entire lower abdomen is pretty hard and painful, is this normal or so I need to make a f/u with my PS prior to my one month f/u? Thank you!

It is not at all unusual to have significant swelling and even very hard and firm "lumps" after liposuction.  This is related to tissue trauma from the procedure.  Rarely do we see true hematomas (collections of blood).  The good news is that it almost always resolves with time.  I recommend gentle massage and near continuous compression garments for the first 4 weeks after liposuction.  Make sure you follow up with your surgeon as scheduled.  Of course if you had a significant change in your condition (redness, fevers etc.) follow up sooner.

Swelling is typical. You may have swelling, which can last 3-6 months after your procedure. I recommend adding hyperbaric oxygen and lymphatic massage along with your compression to help decrease swelling. To improve your final results, I also recommend adding vanquish for further fat removal, exilis/venus legacy for skin tightening, cellutone/z wave to make the skin smooth, remove scar tissue, and improve the skin’s appearance. Swelling is expected and some do swell more than others. I would suggest sending a photo to your surgeon and ask if you need to be seen.

It is common to have swelling at 2 weeks postop. Sometimes the swelling can be firm and feel hard especially on the abdomen. I would still recommend your return to see your surgeon sooner so that he or she can address your concerns. Dr Crabtree
