Thank you for sharing your question and series of photographs. It is difficult without an in-person examination to determine what may be taking place. In most cases this is persistent swelling which will resolve spontaneously given sufficient time. It is important, however, to ensure that other issues are not taking place - discrete fluid collection, muscle laxity, or residual adipose tissue. Since your surgeon knows the full details of your operation, they are in the best position to provide you with a diagnosis and treatment option. Best wishes.
It is normal for it to be swollen 6 months after a tummy tuck. Swelling can be up to a year. The tightness should resolve over time.I would suggest contacting your surgeon if you have questions about healing or any other post op questions.
Swelling after tummy tuck usually lasts 3 to 6 months, but most of the swelling is gone after a few weeks. Healthy people at their ideal weight should have the best overall recovery, but some of this will depend upon the surgical technique and adherence to postoperative protocols. What you are likely experiencing is one reason why I tighten the abdominal wall to return it to an anatomic norm rather than tighten it as much as possible. This produces a functional result without producing prolonged discomfort. The tightness will diminish over time.Kenneth Hughes, MD, ABPS Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA
Swelling after a tummy tuck can persist up to one year post op. However it is always best to discuss any concerns that you have with your surgeon just to ensure that you are healing as expected.
Thank you for your question. I agree with the other responses in that swelling can persist for 6 to 12 months after surgery. Having said that, There are also other possible explanations for What appears to be "Swelling", such a retained fluid collection (seroma). This is diagnosed on physical exam, not by pictures, therefore you should contact your plastic surgeon if you think this might be a possibility.
Dear J122692,Thank yo for your questions. The tightness is normal and should resolve over time. As for the swelling, while most of the gross surgical swelling is gone after 4-6 wks some swelling can persist for up to 6- 8 months. I recommend that you communicate with your surgeon and be evaluated. hoep this helps & good luck.James Sheridan, MD
Good afternoon, thank you for reaching out, an excellent question. Although every surgeon has their own routine, I prefer my patients to wear some sort of tight formfitting garment, Either a formal stage to surgical garments, Or a well formfitting pair of "Spanx", For four months after surgery...
Having a hard, painful abdomen is not expected 6 months after a tummy tuck. I encourage you to return to your surgeon for an evaluation. Some swelling can still be present at this time, but it should not be hard and painful as you described.
From your description it sounds as though your sutures in that area did not hold. I encourage you to return to your surgeon for an evaluation. In the future use a pillow to brace against your abdomen for a cough, sneeze, or sometimes even laughing.
