Thank you for your question about the timing of your tummy tuck after Accutane. Accutane (isotretinoin) can affect the skin’s ability to heal properly, which is why most plastic surgeons recommend waiting at least 6 months to a year after stopping the medication before undergoing any major surgeries, including a tummy tuck. By waiting 9 months, you’re giving your skin sufficient time to regain its normal healing properties, which will help minimize the risk of complications such as poor scarring or delayed wound healing. It's always a good idea to discuss your full medical history with your plastic surgeon so they can make the best recommendation based on your specific situation. With proper timing and planning, you should be in a safe window to move forward with your tummy tuck by next June.Sincerely,Dr. Katzen
This is somewhat controversial and remains a matter of opinion as well as personal experience. In my opinion, I believe that this is reasonable. However, there are others who feel you should wait a year and yet others advise two years.I am more concerned about individuals who undergo resurfacing procedures especially to the face.Discuss your concerns with a surgeon and your dermatologist who most likely prescribed the medication
I agree with Dr. Placik's assessment but I would recommend you wait the full 12 months.Accutane works by literally stopping the cell production in the pits of the oil producing (sebaceous) cells of the skin. That means that occasionally when we need these cells to participate in the healing process (more with resurfacing (laser, peels, Dermabrasion etc) - they do not and an ugly scar results. Although they are not commonly involved in the healing of surgery scars of the breasts and tummy, I think that it is best, to line up every factor in your favor when we operate. I would wait to optimize the result.Good Luck.
Accutane is very successful for the treatment of acne. However, it is metabolized in your liver and does require approximately one year to flush completely from your system. The anesthesiologist will need to know of all medication history to make sure any agents they may need to administer are compatible.
