This Month in Aesthetics: SZA Removes Her Breast Implants, Filler Gets a New FDA Approval, Christie Brinkley’s Surgery, and More

Every month, we strive to bring you a balanced mix of breaking news (like Megan Fox revealing which plastic surgeries she’s had) and advice you can always use, like whether you’ll look flat-chested after breast implant removal. Invariably though, there’s an intriguing headline or viral post that doesn’t make its own stand-alone story yet is still worthy of a share.

Which brings us here, to the latest installment of This Month in Aesthetics, an ICYMI recap of industry-molding moments that we’d be remiss not to acknowledge—from an Oscar winner’s Botox confessions to a new study linking social media use and plastic surgery.

Olivia Colman talks Botox use

The Oscar winner revealed that she’s had “loads” of Botox during an interview on the U.K.’s Vernon Kay Radio 2 show. This isn’t the first time the The Crown star has talked about Botox. In 2021, she told The Times, “I didn’t tell my husband [about the Botox] and then for about six months he kept saying, ‘Hello, Pretty!’ and then I told him and he found it hilarious. And then it wore off. It’s temporary. But I’ve always loved faces that aren’t symmetrical and teeth that aren’t flawless,” she said. Colman also said that she typically gets Botox in between jobs; it’s been reported that she stopped before landing her role as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, to be more in character.

Juvéderm Voluma XC receives FDA approval for use in the temples

Providers have long used hyaluronic acid fillers off label to address hollow temples, a treatment that makes for a subtle yet impactful result in overall facial rejuvenation. Earlier this month, Juvéderm Voluma XC became the first to earn FDA approval for this purpose. More specifically, the approval is for “improvement of moderate to severe temple hollowing, with results lasting up to 13 months with optimal treatment,” according to a press release issued by parent company AbbVie. (Previous indications for the filler include cheek and chin augmentation.)

SZA explains why she removed her breast implants

The singer, who’s previously hinted at plastic surgery in her song lyrics, is now talking about both getting breast implants—and removing them. On a recent episode of the S.H.E. MD podcast, SZA revealed that she’d had a breast augmentation without consulting with her OB-GYN, despite learning she had a significantly increased risk of breast cancer due to her family history. During the surgery, her doctor discovered fibrosis throughout her breasts: “When I got my boobs done, my doctor took out some of my fibrosis, but … there was so much fibrosis, it was crazy,” she explained. Ultimately, this fibrosis (a thickening and hardening of connective tissue) spurred her to remove her implants

“They ended up hurting me. I got way too much scar tissue because my breasts are too dense and I’m not supposed to have breast implants. And so I ended up getting extra fibrosis, like, with tissue, whatever, and I didn’t feel good and it was painful. So I took them out, and now, they’re just my boobs,” she said.

A new study finds a direct correlation between social media and plastic surgery

The study, conducted out of Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, found that people who spend more time on social media are more likely to get plastic surgery. The research involved patients at a dermatology clinic between 2019 and 2022; survey results indicated that increased time spent on social media, using filters, and following plastic surgery and dermatology accounts all upped the likelihood of someone wanting to have plastic surgery.

Christie Brinkley undergoes skin cancer surgery

The 70-year-old supermodel took to Instagram to reveal her skin cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery. “The good news for me is we caught the basal cell carcinoma early. And I had great doctors that removed the cancer and stitched me up to perfection like an haute couture Dior,” she captioned a bandaged selfie. (She also posted photos of the excised area, both before and after it was stitched up.)  Like Khloé Kardashian, who underwent a similar surgery in 2022, Brinkley used the opportunity to stress the importance of sun protection and urge her followers to get regular skin checks. “The good news for you is that all of this can be avoided by being diligent with your sun protection! And doing regular total body check ups…that is a MUST! I was lucky to find mine, because I was accompanying one of my daughters to HER check up…it wasn’t my appointment so I wasn’t going to say anything but at the VERY end I asked if he could just look at a little tiny dot I could feel as I applied my foundation. He took a look and knew immediately it needed a biopsy!” she wrote.

The View cohosts share their experiences with weight-loss drugs

Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin are the latest celebs opening up about their experience with Ozempic and other similar drugs. Goldberg says she started taking Mounjaro because she reached nearly 300 pounds after being prescribed steroids for back pain. “I had taken all those steroids and was on all this stuff, and one of the things that helps me drop the weight is Mounjaro,” she said during the show’s Hot Topics segment.

Hostin then said that she’d also taken the drug. “During Covid, I gained 40 pounds. All I did was eat. I love to cook, and I found out I love to eat. And I was horrified by the fact that I would have to come out on air. So I took Mounjaro.” She also talked about the unexpected backlash after she dropped the weight: “I got all these nasty emails saying ‘You’re too skinny’ and ‘Why did you do this’ and ‘You’re taking the drug away from diabetics.’”

Brittany Cartwright reveals she had facial liposuction to get rid of her double chin

The Vanderpump Rules alum got candid about undergoing two different procedures right before filming began on her new Bravo show, The Valley. “Three weeks before we started filming, I had work done on my double chin. We call it the turkey gobbler, runs in my family. No matter what I was going through, no matter how much weight I lost, I still felt I had something there. It was just under my chin,” she said on an episode of When Reality Hits, her podcast with now estranged husband Jax Taylor.

But after having chin liposuction and Morpheus8, Cartwright wasn’t happy with how her face looked once filming started. Despite being told by her doctors that she’d be recovered in time, Cartwright says viewers will notice her altered appearance. “It’s going to look like whenever I’m upset or something, that I’ve got a frowning face. And in the beginning, it was so hilarious because I had to literally put my finger on my bottom lip so that I could speak because my bottom lip would not move up and down,” although she did note that her face is now back to normal.
