Will root canal cause black gum line?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Black lines at the gum line are common due to darkening of the tooth after having an root canal treatment.

However, with the proper restoration, i.e. a Zirconium crown, there is a high likelihood that we can mask the black line. You definitely want to avoid a PFM if black lines are of concern to you. Good luck!

The best way to treat your situation is to schedule an initial consultation with an Orthodontist to discuss what options you have to open up the space for the lateral incisor without extracting a premolar, as well as to shift the midline back in to the correct position.

After the orthodontic treatment is complete, you will need to have an implant placed in the position of the missing lateral incisor and allow 4-6 months for this to heal prior to loading this with a crown.

At the time your restorative dentist is having the implant crown made, he/she can also have a matching veneer made for your peg lateral. I also recommend having a Nightguard made to protect the implant after it is placed.

Good Luck!

This is a very unique situation. It is very rare for an implant to break. (In the past, small diameter implants had a higher failure rate.)

However, to have 2 implants break makes me wonder: could you be grinding or have a particular biting or clenching bite that your previous dentist did not evaluate properly?

At this point, unfortunately, your best option is to evaluate your bite and determine which is the best implant and implant angle for your mouth. I also highly encourage you to have a mouthguard made for you after the implants are placed. Good Luck!

Problems and Complications with Lumineers?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
When Lumineers or any restoration are placed properly most of the complications listed should not be experienced. The reason for #1: Halitosis- may be due to: poor seal on the restorations which allows bacteria to gather at the margins of the restoration and can create Halitosis (bad breath); #2- Breaks or cracks: can be due to improper bonding or an inaccurate bite. The breaks can also be due to a patient that is grinding his/her teeth and not wearing a Nightguard to protect the restorations; #3- Gum disease: Can be due to the improper placement of the restorations causing irritation of the gums. This could be because the restorations were placed too deep into the tissue. When restorations are placed above the gums, they allow for better tissue healing and a healthier more cosmetic appearance.

Good luck!

Lumineers and non-prep restorations can be bonded to crowns. However, I do not recommend this method because it will add bulk to your teeth and make your teeth appear to be a lot bigger than they are. The best option is to remove the crowns and have Cosemetic Emax crowns placed. Good luck!

How Much Does It Cost for Tooth Replacement

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Pregnancy can often times severely affect the gums due to the changes in hormone levels. For this reason is it highly important to visit your dentist on a regular basis for cleanings during the pregnancy. When the tissues are inflamed, infected and start to recede, you may need to see a Periodontist (gum specialist) for further evaluation of the area. Gum recession does not necessarily warrant tooth loss or tooth replacement unless it is severely advanced periodontitis (loss of gum and bone structure). Your general dentist can refer you to a Periodontist. The Periodontist may be able to treat the area with tissue grafting. If you do need to have the teeth extracted, implants are always a wonderful treatment option if you are a candidate. Your Periodontist can also evaluate the area to determine if Implants would be the right choice for you. I highly recommend you see your General Dentist and discuss these options with your dentist. I would also recommend you ask to have the area evaluated by a trained Periodontist. Good luck!

Options for Chipped Front Tooth Restoration

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
A chipped tooth can often times be repaired with simple bonding. If the tooth does not have any decay or pulpal involvement (needing root canal treatment), the tooth can be cosmetically and conservatively treated with composite resin (white filling) bonding. This is the treatment I often recommend to my younger patients who need less invasive treatment. This type of restoration is less aggressive and does not require much removing of tooth structure. However, if your tooth is further compromised, you may be better served with a Porcelain Veneer. A porcelain veneer is also a less aggressive restoration which involves reducing about 0.5 mm of tooth structure from the front surface of the tooth. Your best bet is to do the most conservative treatment option given to you by your dentist. Since you are a young patient, it is important that you preserve as much tooth structure as possible. Good luck!

There is no limit to how many teeth can be replaced in a healthy mouth. You do not need to have every tooth replaced. You can replace a few teeth and bridge them together as well. There are many options. I highly recommend you see your periodontist or Oral surgeon for a consultation to determine the best option for you!

When a tooth is considered "dead" this means the nerve has died and the supply to that tooth has been cut off. Over time this tooth will most likely turn dark. I highly recommend covering your front tooth with a porcelain restoration to avoid having to see a dark front tooth. Your options to restore this tooth would be a Porcelain veneer or a Porcelain crown. If the existing tooth has a good deal of tooth decay that needs to be removed, the best option may be a crown. However, if the tooth itself is in good condition, the best option may be something more conservative like a porcelain veneer. You need to have the tooth evaluated by a general dentist to determine the best treatment option for this tooth.

Porcelain Veneers Vs Dental Crowns?

Asked By:AnonymousANSWERS (1)
Veneers are recommended when the corrections are more cosmetic corrections, ie: irregular tooth shape, color distortion, slight malalignment, or chipped teeth. These can be corrected with veneers. If the resin for treatment is due to bigger complications, or decay, root canals, or severley fractured teeth, crowns are the better restoration and they offer more support for the tooth.
