Plastic Surgery? Go See Cops First!

Plastic surgery has a long but inaccurate history when it comes to criminals on the lam totally changing their appearance to look like a completely different person.

Probably the most famous was Humphrey Bogart in the 1940s flick, Dark Passage, that told the tale of an inmate who fled Alcatraz, found an underground plastic surgeon and finally looked nothing like his former self when healed.

Well, that’s movie magic and a perfect example of the need to suspend disbelief to enjoy the film. But unless you have a complete face transplant, even the very best plastic surgeon in the world can only make you look like a better, more rested and refreshed version of yourself.

Nonetheless, in the Philippines, a pending bill will require all people who want cosmetic plastic surgery to first seek permission and clearance from their National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Philippine’s version of our FBI.

The proposed law concentrates on:
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Cosmetic surgery of the chin (mentoplasty)
  • Ear surgery (Otoplasty)
  • Cosmetic nose surgery (rhinoplasty)
  • Face lifts
  • Facial scar revision
  • Hair replacement
  • Double eyelid surgery
Rep. Angelina Tan, the legislator proposing a top cop clearance for cosmetic plastic surgery, seems convinced that one wanted woman was on the lam for a year and managed to avoid jail because she had a nose job.

Said Representative Tan: “The bill aims to forestall criminals from hiding their identities and evading arrest by requiring facial plastic surgery patients to present an NBI clearance before undergoing a procedure.”
She didn’t mention anything about movie crooks having plastic surgery. But, in the Philippines only two crooks tried escape-via-rejuvenation surgery.

Back in 2009, a Philippine cosmetic surgeon performed plastic surgery on a notorious robbery gang leader without knowing his patient was running from the long arm of the law. The gang leader told his surgeon he wanted to look more like a woman.

So the gang leader had a nose job and eyelid surgery.

But the surgery did not disguise him very much, if at all.
He was killed in a shoot-out against the NBI 14 days after having cosmetic surgery. The NBI says they instantly recognized him.
