What is miraDry? How does it work?

miraDry
miraDry is now available in Australia since having received positive reviews from the U.S. following FDA approval in 2011. The hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) treatment was approved in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in June 2014. The device has proven highly effective in treating excessive underarm sweating, which can be a source of stress and embarrassment for the many Australians who suffer from excessive underarm sweating and/or body odour.

Explaining Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterised by excessive sweating of the armpits, feet, hands or face. The uncontrollable sweating does not appear to have specific triggers and can occur even when the individual is not overheated. Specific causes of primary hyperhidrosis have not been identified, although the condition does appear to run in families.

Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Treatment for hyperhidrosis has run the gamut from prescription-grade topical solutions to surgery to destroy nerves responsible for the formation of perspiration. MiraDry provides another solution – microwave energy destroys sweat glands located in the armpit therefore eliminating excessive sweating in this area.
The miraDry procedure is quick and minimally invasive, involving little discomfort and little to no downtime afterward. Since the underarm sweat glands only make up around 2 percent of all the sweat glands in the body, their elimination does not affect the body’s ability to regulate its own temperature. Compensatory sweating (excessive sweating from other areas of the body) is not as common with MiraDry as other types of sweat treatments like ETS surgery.

How does it Work?

MiraDry delivers carefully controlled electromagnetic energy via a non-invasive handheld device. Energy is directed below the surface of the skin, directly to the sweat glands located in the underarm area. Through a heating process known as thermolysis sweat glands are destroyed while the surface of the skin remains cool and comfortable. Because sweat glands are completely destroyed, MiraDry is considered a permanent treatment for excessive underarm sweat.

MiraDry treatments are performed on site at North Western Vascular and typically take around one and a half hours to complete. Patients can resume their regular activities once the procedure is completed although strenuous exercise may be restricted for a few days after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs can be used for the first few days after treatment to maintain patient comfort during the recovery process.

Complications associated with MiraDry are rare and might include swelling and discomfort at the treatment site or numbness in the underarm area. Numbness can persist for several months, but is usually not permanent.

North Western Vascular recommends that patients undergo one miraDry treatment on Level 5 for optimal results.

MiraDry is an innovative answer to excessive underarm sweating and body odour, producing permanent results with little discomfort and downtime.
