Botox and Tension-Type Headaches: Migraines
Botox Serotype A has been used succesfully for years as a treatment for migraine headaches, although its use is highly unpredictable in terms of which particular patients will benefit from therapy.
A recent study in the Journal of Headache Pain describes the study of Botox A in the treatment of a very common condition: Tension-type Headaches. The results confirm a benefit with therapy within one month of treatment. In fact, reductions were noted in prophylactic medications taken by the patient. "Not only are patients benefiting from the botox treatment, but they are also using less medication to prevent their symptoms," says Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, a plastic surgeon practicing in Santa Monica, CA.
"Use of Botox A in tension type headaches expands the options available for this very difficult problem," adds Dr. Karamanoukian.
Further study will be needed, according to the study performed by the Department of Neurology in Cairo, Egypt. This may ultimately pose a considerable stepping stone to the treatment of tension type headaches in patients suffering with this chronic condition.
