Will a tummy tuck get rid of pregnancy stretch marks?

Fast stretching of the skin causes damage on dermis and therefore, makes the skin thinner causing stretch marks. Due to the cracks, the skin loses its elasticity and starts to become droopy. Additionally, since the muscles, which are the main supportive tissues of anterior abdominal skin, drift from each other, a bellied appearance stays on.

While the photo doesn't clearly show the areas of concern, most of your stretch marks should be able to be removed. In general, the lower incision will be placed below your c-section scar and extend towards your hips. The location of the upper incision will depend on the amount of skin laxity you have - the more laxity, the more skin can be removed. Typically the upper incision is placed above the belly button and extends towards the hips as well. Any skin, fatty tissue and stretch marks within these two incisions will be completely removed. Any stretch marks that remain above the upper incision will unfortunately remain but will be moved down towards the lower incision and be less visible. The stretch marks over your hips will likely not be minimized as much as less skin if usually removed from this area. Also, with further weight loss you can expect more skin laxity and therefore more skin being removed. This will further minimize the remaining stretch marks. An experienced Plastic Surgeon can show you exactly what will be removed and what will remain.

You would have an excellent result from a full tummy tuck.  It would correct the weakness of the muscles of the abdomen, remove the skin excess and stretch marks between your belly button and pubic hairline, and revise your belly button.

A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat in the lower portion of the abdomen. Therefore, It will remove the stretch marks in the lower portion of the abdomen and lower all remaining stretch marks. Good luck!

Hi and thank you for your question. Based on your photo, you appear to be a great candidate for an abdominoplasty. In a tummy tuck the skin between the umbilicus and public area is removed, therefore any stretch marks in that area are removed. If there are any above the level of the umbilicus they will likely remain after surgery. I recommend you consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to discuss your concerns further. Best wishes

Thank you for your question & photo.  From your photo & information given, I would most likely recommend a tummy tuck w/lipo 360 for best results.  This would repair your abdominal muscles and remove excess skin & fat.  Liposuction will address the excess fat with some skin retraction.  Abdominoplasty will address excess skin & repair of muscle. The abdominal wall can be weakened after pregnancy and (or) significant weight gain & loss.  By repairing the muscle, not only does the appearance of your abdominal area improve, but your core strength as well.  Your expectations and health will dictate the best procedure(s) for you. Hi and thank you for your question. Normally the stretch marks that you have bellow the belly button to the level of the pubis will disappear, the once above the belly button will not, but will come down and you might be able to cover them at least partially with the bikini or underwear.

Tummy tucks are a great solution for stretch marks that are below the belly button.  any stretch marks above the belly button will translocated lower on the abdomen and easier to hide. 

Hello Shantay,The stretch marks below the belly button are removed with a tummy tuck. Depending on the amount of extra skin, some of the stretch marks above the belly button can be removed.  If the stretch marks above the belly button are not removed, they will be moved to the lower abdomen, and are easier to cover with clothing such as shorts or a bathing suit.  The incision is made at or just below your current scar so the scar can be removed. I agree with losing your weight before surgery, I expect you will get a great result from a tummy tuck.All the best to you,Dr. Nancy de Kleer
