I've attatched a photo of my xrays. My oral surgeon is suggesting a genioplasty, but if my maxilla is also retruded, then I would like to go with a maxilla mandibular advancement even if it is only a few milimeters. If you could look at my photo and tell me what you think, that would be very helpful. Thank you!
Answer: Jaw surgery instead of genioplasty? This is a bit difficult without a complete skeletal analysis based on your ceph (x-ray) and physical exam. From what I can see on your x-ray your maxilla and mandible appear fine. I would not recommend maxillary and mandibular advancements in lieu of a genioplasty. Please seek several consultations from board certified oral surgeons or plastic surgeons.

Answer: Xray Clinical evaluation is needed. From what I see genioplasty should be fine. Again, I can not see your midface without evaluation.

Answer: Maxillomandibular Advancement While a maxillomandibular advancement can be done in anyone the key question is the benefit versus the risks of the surgery. It is a big surgery with some risks if the goal is just a few millimeters of upper and lower jaw advancement in someone whose bite is otherwise normal. One would not normally do such big surgery for a moderate aesthetic facial benefit. They are other simpler and less risky methods to achieve these aesthetic goals.

Answer: Jaw surgery? Maxillomandibular advancement is not a small procedure. I would have to evaluate you in person to make a recommendation but your radiograph does not reveal significant maxillary/mandibular deficiency. Good luck. Donald R. Nunn MD, DDS Atlanta Plastic Surgeon.
