Women want c-cup breasts, as suggested by a new survey of plastic surgeons who routinely conduct breast surgery.  The majority (80%) of breast implants used in cosmetic surgery are 300 to 400cc in size, or, a small to full c-cup bra.

Breast implants: many more options than just breast size

While the size of the breast implant  is of critical importance to a woman opting for breast implant surgery, there are a number of other decisions prior to surgery, such as the breast implant type or the placement of the breast implant.

Plastic surgeons responding to the survey, and reported in the March/April issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal, reveal a number of breast implant surgery preferences by patients and doctors.

Breast augmentation options and preferences

  • Saline vs. silicone: Despite heavy marketing by silicone breast implant makers, 60% of surgeons still use saline implants, and the majority of these doctors selected saline implants for 75% to 100% of their patients undergoing first-time breast augmentation. “Although the reintroduction of silicone gel implants was accompanied by expectations of a sharp increase in their use, this survey revealed that, among Aesthetic Society members, saline implants are used more often than silicone gel implants,” said the study authors Rod Rohrich, MD and Edward Reece, MD.
  • Incision location: 64% of doctors preferred an incision near the breast crease, while 25% preferred an incision around the bottom half of the areola.
  • Breast Implant texture: Smooth implants, rather than implants with a textured surface, were most often preferred by 92% of respondents because it was the surgeon’s preference, less wrinkling, or overall better results for the patient.
  • Breast implant shape: 96% of surgeons used round, rather than anatomically-shaped, implants.
  • Breast implant placement: The most common position for implant placement was under the muscle (62% of surgeons).
