Q: Stomach distention after Liposuction asked by Pkashunger Austin, Texas
It all depends on what you mean by distention. Do you mean a curve to the wall of the abdomen? Do you mean continued fatty areas? Many women who complain about fulless in the abdomen after liposuction either had liposuction performed when they really needed an abdominoplasty (tummy-tuck) to fix the muscles of the abdominal wall. Especially after pregnancy, the muscles can stretch and separate and leave the abdomen with a curve that is not fixed with liposuction alone. An abdominoplasty removes fat, skin, and repairs muscle. Liposuction only removes fat. Other women who get liposuction performed also have internal fat that needs to be lost with diet and exercise. Liposuction will only treat the fat that is located between the skin and muscle layer, not on the inside around your organs. This visceral (internal) fat is only lost with aerobic exercise. As your question cannot be really answered without an exam, I would suggest going back to your physician and asking more questions. Good luck! Evan Sorokin MD
