Why is My Nose Red and Broken out 2 Weeks After Rhinoplasty?

I had rhinoplasty exactly 2 wks ago. My doc put tape across my nose after removing the splint, which I removed a few days ago. My nose has since become super broken out and I have red splotches across it. It looks like it is red and swollen like crazy. I put on some acne treatment but am worried that this persistent redness will cause broken capillaries & swelling. Should I be applying cold compresses to reduce the redness/swelling? What should I do? I'm scared it'll cause permanent damage

A: Nose swelling and redness after rhinoplasty in Los Angeles

It is very normal to get redness of the nose and/or skin breakout after surgery. irritation of the nasal skin from tape which is used for nasal implant does often contribute to buildup of oil in the nasal skin and skin breakout. cleaning nasal skin with cleansers is the best treatment.

I Had a Closed Rhino-septoplasty 8 Days Ago,when I Will Be Able to Breath?

the surgery was done on january 14th , they corrected my deviated septum, straighten my nose ,removed the bump with slight elevation of the nose tip. i'm happy with the results all going fine, but still can't breath well by my nose through day and night and i sleep with my mouth open and cause of that i snore sometimes when i'm sleeping ,my doctor said this all cause of the swelling, i'm just concerned if this is common and when i will be able to breath well???

A: Some nasal congestion is normal after rhinoplasty

Hi Farah,

You are still very early in the healing phase and it is absolutely normal to have some congestion and difficulty breathing at this point. This is due to the swelling that results from manipulating the tissues during surgery. It generally takes several weeks for the internal swelling to resolve. However, you should notice an improvement in you breathing over the next couple of weeks. Different people heal at different rates. A lot of it also depends on what specifically was performed during the surgery. Your surgeon will be the best person to answer more specifically as to how long it will take for you to breathe more comfortably. Rest assured that the first week is usually the worst and you will continue to notice some improvement every day. I hope this helps!

A: Treatment Options for Red Spot on Nose

Hi PetiteGalvan,

Without examining you in person and palpating the area of concern, it is difficult to say with certainty what we are dealing with. However, if when you feel that area, you notice a bump or prominent piece of bone under the skin, it is possible that a rhinoplasty may improve this. However, my guess is that there isn’t an underlying bony issue and that the discoloration is only on the skin and is vascular in nature. These can often be treated quite simply with a laser. However, given your complexion you will need to make sure you see a physician who is well-versed in lasers in various skin types, in order to avoid scarring or hyperpigmentation. If you decide to have the rhinoplasty, I would recommend having the surgery first and then the laser after the skin has healed adequately from the surgery. Hope this helps! Good luck!
