Am I a Rhinoplasty Candidate with My Wide, Bulbous Tip? (photo)

I have always hated the tip of my nose. The bridge is a little wide and has a bit of a bump, but I would be satisfied with just a reduction in the tip. It's very wide and bulbous. It looks fine from the profile view, but front on it's very.. unattractive. Is there a way to have it reduced without too drastic of a change? I do not want a narrow, pinched look. It also tends to swell in cold, heat, or with allergies. Are there nonsurgical options too?

A: You look like a fabulous candidate for rhinoplasty.

Dear Ontario friend;

I do not know if you are in Ontario, Canada or Ontario, California, but wherever you are, I think rhinoplasty is a good idea.  Your entire nose is a bit wide.  You are correct in saying the bridge is wide and, certainly, the tip is wide and bulbous.  My sense is that you could be helped.  You have other facial features that are fabulous.

Of course, you do not want a "narrow, pinched look" that  does not happen by accident.  It happens because the surgeon's judgment is imperfect.  Over-removal of bone and cartilage is performed.  So, make sure that you remind your cosmetic plastic surgeon that you do not expect to look like you have had an overdone nose job.  As a matter of fact, you do not want to look like you have had a nose job at all!  The best rhinoplasty surgeries never call attention to themselves.

With respect to your comment that your nose, "swells in cold, heat, or with allergies," I do not know if you are referring to the outside or the inside airway.  If that is inside your nose, then, the nasal surgeon will look at the turbinates and other internal structures to see if there is some way to improve that.

In any event, I wish you good luck and would certainly encourage you to pursue consultations for rhinoplasty, which remains one of the great cosmetic surgeries.

What Kind of Stitches Are Used in Rhinoplasty?

Do they dissolve or are they taken out? Do I have a choice? My friend had rhinoplasty last month and she had 16 stitches. She said getting the stitches removed was more painful than the surgery.

A: What Kind of Stitches Are Used in Rhinoplasty?

  I would guess that different Rhinoplasty Surgeons use different stitches.  I use dissolvable stitches for all closed Rhinoplasty and even in the front for open Rhinoplasties, so nothing has to be removed.

How Common is This Post-rhinoplasty Procedure? Benefits? Risks? (photo)

I had a limited rhinoplasty done. My surgeon says that my nasal bones have shifted outward, back towards their original position. This has left noticeable protrusions in my nose at the upper bridge (pictured below). My doctor has suggested putting me under local anesthesia and doing some "carpentry" on these areas. How common is this "shifting" and required "carpentry" occurrence? Is this procedure likely to work given the degree of protrusion? Risks? Thanks in advance for your help.

A: Revision rhinoplasty for the crooked nose.

The success of the revision rhinoplasty for the crooked nose depends on the skill and experience of the surgeon. It is not normally risky and should be possible to end up with a straighter nose.
