Shocked and Disappointed

I saw Dr. Tan in 2016 for a functional rhinoplasty.
An ENT who specialized in adult care did not feel comfortable performing surgery on my nose due to its small size. I went to Dr. Tan as she specializes in pediatrics. Initially, she made me feel comfortable and confident that she could help me. I was elated to finally be getting my deviated septum fixed and to have a “functional rhinoplasty” (covered by my insurance co.) to help with my nose breathing function.
I went in for surgery in June 2016. Beforehand, I had several appointments with Dr. Tan to discuss the surgery and how it would be beneficial. I was sent to Straub to have detailed photos taken of my nose. These were to be used during the surgery. I was happy with my nose’s appearance pre-surgery, but was exhausted from never being able to properly breathe through my nose.
The team at Kapi’olani was amazing as usual. The anesthesiologist was kind and made me laugh before going under as that can be an anxious time.
After the surgery, I was in recovery at home for several days and had restricted activities for a long period. My mom took me to Dr. Tan’s office and the large “stints” were removed. For many months, I didn’t feel any benefits and my nose was drastically different in appearance.
Dr. Tan said my nose would settle over time. I followed up with all appointments, including a visit one year later as instructed. I shared that I still was not feeling benefits (and my nose still looked quite different). She shared that I had “nasal valve collapse.” During the surgery, cartilage had been taken from the septum for the nasal valves to be supported, however this is a mistake.
I learned from my own research that cartilage should be taken from the ear/ribs for the nasal valves. I am now worse off than before.
Dr. Tan recommended “nasal cones” to help me with breathing at night. I remember going to Longs and asking about them and they said to look online. I felt terrible. All of this time (and money as insurance doesn’t cover every thing) spent on surgery and recovery and my breathing was worse than before.
Now, nearly 7 years later, I am finally writing this review. My nose looks fine (although *quite different), but I still suffer from all the things I did before the surgery and from “nasal valve collapse.”
Dr. Tan seemed knowledgeable and kind, but, in the end, she did not help me. She also did not offer ways to truly help with the nasal valve collapse issue.
At some point, I will need to see an ENT again and have cartilage taken from the ear or ribs for my nasal valves. That doesn’t sound too fun, so I’ve been putting it off.
I wish Dr. Tan had been more knowledgeable about where to get cartilage for the nasal valves and that she had been more transparent about making that mistake. And have offered to repair it or provide some sort of help besides advising purchasing “nasal cones.”
I am shocked to see Dr. Tan has opened a center for plastic surgery and filler treatments. The mistake she made with my nose may be common to ENTs, but it is not for experienced plastic surgeons.
