5th Time Wasn't a Charm
Hi everyone. I had 5 different Rhinoplasty related surgeries with Dr. Ward over 6 years. I have spent the past 6 years healing (+ more future healing) and a lot of money, time & tears spent in the process. Here is a factual breakdown of my experience.
My original nose: Was not horrific. It was deviated a bit, had a hump, the tip hanged down a bit. I wanted to breathe better & be more attractive. I am not a body dysmorphic person & never expected perfection in this process.
First surgery: Septo-Rhinoplasty. Both functional and cosmetic. I followed every aftercare process to the T. After my initial surgery he acknowledged the end result didn’t hit the target. I had many bridge bumps, tip going towards one side and tip still a bit droopy.
Surgeries 2 through 5: After the initial surgery, I waited the recommended times & had four smaller-medium touch up-fix procedures in the following 4 years with him. All of my touchups were spoken about like they were easy, quick and would fix any issues we both agreed on. Surgery #3 went wrong with a massive/wide columellar strut graft placed that shifted. It wrecked my nose. My final procedure ended up looking like a weird lip lift that left very prominent scaring on the top of my lip below the nose and nostrils and a 15-16MM wide, protruding, hanging & twisted columella. Even when all healed, I looked weird to the point where FaceTune was my friend for everything related to my nose. Besides the thousands I paid + my the thousands my insurance paid for in surgery #1, I had to pay a $1,500-$1,700 facility fee for each of these fix surgeries. The facility is a room down the hallway.
Dr. Ward: I like him. He has a good bedside manner overall and a nice man. My review in no way is to say he is a terrible surgeon. By looking at some of his other cases, he is obviously talented. However, in my case the final results were bad.
His Staff: In the early days, wow what a team. Responsive, caring and knowledgeable. Now it’s 50/50. Many good ones have left. Most of the folks over the years who deal more with the money act like you’re just money to them.
His Anesthesiologist: Sean (Shawn?) is Excellent. Among the best in the business.
Medical Records: It took months to get all of them after a lot of red tape, wrong phone numbers & email addresses given, etc.
Current & Today: I waited an appropriate amount of time from my final Dr. Ward surgery. In July 2023 I flew 2,400 miles one way from my home to get a full reconstruction done on my nose with a new surgeon. This is now the 6th time I have had nasal surgery. It has been a painful & extremely expensive journey. I have even more scars, my rib cartilage was removed for a rib graft & my healing time will potentially take years. This was a 7.5 hour surgery & was a ton of money $. They found ear cartilage in my forehead & all over my nose. The new surgeon said he was shocked, inside my nose was a mess & my medical records didn’t prepare him for what he found. I am happy to report that even at 7 weeks with lots of swelling, my nose looks better now than it has ever looked. I will have to have laser scar removal & another treatment to improve the scarring damage down the road.
Closing: I’m not telling anyone to not go to Dr. Ward. This is simply my experience over many years. I do wonder why years ago he didn’t just do a full redo of my nose instead of little short procedures that kept making it worse. If I could turn back time, I wish 2-3 surgeries ago he would have said it wasn’t going to improve or had attempted a full revision. Overconfidence? I will say this about surgery in general; Research, Get many consults. & talk to patients. If you commit to it, know that it could be multiple surgeries and years before you get results that you are not ashamed of. Peace.
