Epicanthoplasty is irreversible
I really dislike the way my epicanthoplasty looks, as it looks very unnatural without makeup and makes my eyes look more close-set. I'm doing research now and learning that it is irreversible without major scarring. I'm really disappointed and wish Dr. Lee had discussed this major, permanent decision with me before rushing me off to the surgery room, as he did not talk to me about this at all. Make sure you discuss all plans for surgery with your surgeon, and never be afraid to ask questions. Your surgeon does not necessarily know better than you, and always speak up when you're not comfortable with something!
Not What I Wanted
1 surgery and 2 revisions later, I unfortunately had a negative experience with Dr. Lee. I went to Dr. Lee as a ptosis case with pre-existing double eyelids. I had ptosis in both eyes, but it was more severe in one than the other. The first surgery ended as a failure as I still had ptosis in one eye and multiple creases. During the second one, too much anesthesia was administered and I was unable to open my eyes during the procedure, so Dr. Lee had to operate based on my pre-operation photos. This surgery resulted in an eyelid shape totally different from my original. My eyelid space was very thin, hooded, and my eye shapes were asymmetrical. The inner corner of one eye is thicker than the rest of the eyelid, while the other eyelid shape is more naturally tapered. I had a 2nd revision with Dr. Lee to address these concerns, all of which is verbalized and he expressed he understood, but the only issue thing that seemed to be done was a moving of the crease (to have more eyelid space or "thicker eyelids") and my inner corners (which I didn't ask for).
The aftercare was not superb. While Dr. Lee generally answered my questions, his answers were often very short and he didn't address all of my concerns. At every preop appointment, he would say he understood what I wanted and reassure me that my surgery would be "simple," but I don't believe I got the results I was asking for. If he was unable to achieve the results I wanted, I believe he should have told me so. I was told that my healing process after the 2nd surgery would be quick and I would look presentable in 2 weeks, but my eyelids looked horrendous for a very long time after my 2nd surgery and I had to go to work as I didn't schedule more time off. I felt as though I had placed my trust in Dr. Lee but frankly, I felt as though I had been falsely reassured along my journey.
I wish I had gone to see another doctor after the 1st procedure. Dr. Lee removed a lot of eyelid skin during the 3rd procedure, and now my options for obtaining the eyes I wanted are limited. I had wanted to maintain my eyelid shape and only fixed the ptosis, as it was making me stress my forehead, but now my eyelid shape is totally different and while my ptosis is fixed (I have no issues with opening my eyes), I still stress my forehead to compensate for the new hooding of my eyelids (and it's worse on the side that it used to be better on).
I'd like to clarify that my eyes look do not terrible. They are ok. But the surgeries brought me new and additional complications, and issues (i.e. with applying makeup as the eyelid shapes are now asymmetrical) while not completely fixing my previous issues (stressing of forehead still exists, except it's now in the other eye). A lot of time, energy, and money was spent on these procedures as I was an out-of-town patient. The recoveries are time consuming and emotionally draining. It's just not the results I wanted given the price point and the straightforwardness of the initial problem, which is disappointing as I see he has a lot of great results otherwise.
