Provider Review
An Honest, Fair, and Balanced Review of Shape & Beauty, Cancun MX. I am a seasoned cosmetic surgery veteran, having five prior surgeries in Philadelphia, USA. When I reached my middle 40s, I decided to research the possibility of having a face-lift (rhytidectomy) in conjunction with an eye-lift (blepharoplasty) and nose surgery (rhinoplasty) to improve and refresh my overall appearance. I knew exactly what I was looking for, and I am very discerning. Not only have I had other procedures, but I am a professional researcher, so I began my quest approximately two years before I made my decision on when, where, and whom would perform my cosmetic surgery. I live in three different areas (Philadelphia, Miami, & Cancun) and interviewed several surgeons in each area. Ultimately, I chose Dr. Marco Antonio Carmona of Shape & Beauty, Cancun because he met the following criterium: 1. Dr. Carmona is a double board certified cosmetic surgeon in Mexico and the United States. 2. Dr. Carmona performs his surgeries at Amerimed Hospital in Cancun. 3. Before and after photos of similar procedures are impressive (plasticsurgeriescancun.com) 4. Dr. Carmona's credentials and artistry are among the finest I have found. 5. I am in the process of learning to speak Spanish. Being bilingual is important and displays respect for the people of Mexico, especially if you are doing business in their country. I am far from fluent, but working hard toward it. I greatly appreciate the fact that Dr. Carmona, his staff, and the staff at Amerimed all speak very good English. They deserve respect for this courtesy, as it is not owed to us. In my opinion, the USA could improve their efforts to set and reach language benchmarks during early education, but that's a completely different subject, and I digress. By the time I met Dr. Carmona for my consultation, I required very little reassurance, because the research spoke in his favor. Here is the timeline of the weeks leading to my surgery date: 1. Three months prior: Scheduled surgery date and made the requisite down payment. 2. Two weeks prior: Contacted office to schedule pre-surgical testing at Amerimed hospital. Dr. Carmona's assistant was very helpful with this process. Testing included a complete blood panel, chest X-Ray, and EKG with an Internist to read and verify the results. These tests were performed 6 days prior to surgery at very reasonable prices which are set by Amerimed. Prices are always subject to change, but I can assure you that they are reasonable, and the overall experience was more than satisfactory. 3. After the testing at Amerimed, I visited Dr. Carmona's office for my pre-op appointment. He is thorough and professional. He provided comprehensive pre and post-op instructions in English. Take the time to read them thoroughly before surgery to avoid asking unnecessary questions during your recovery. I left Dr. Carmona's office feeling confident and excited about my metamorphosis. Caveat: I regret not asking Dr. Carmona's assistant to email pre-op instructions at least two weeks prior to surgery. I know better. I received my instructions for my pre-op appointment 6 days prior to surgery. There are many supplements to avoid and lifestyle changes that you should be aware of two weeks prior to surgery. Do yourself a favor and ask for instructions well in advance. 4. On the day of my surgery, I arrived at Amerimed hospital at 6:45 AM. They were expecting me and proceeded with all arrangements as planned. Amerimed hospital is immaculate and very well appointed at every phase. 5. Dr. Carmona arrived on time, and completely on his game. His focus and dedication are evident. He acquainted me with two other doctors that would be attending my surgery; an Ear, Nose & Throat Specialist and the Anesthesiologist. Both were professional, clear, and reassuring. 6. My surgery went very well, I awoke in recovery and was immediately transferred to a modern, private room on the third floor. Caveat: I did not have a family member who was able to attend the surgery. If you have someone, I would suggest that you bring them to spend the night with you in the hospital (couch provided). The nurses and staff at Amerimed were excellent, although, having a family member to take care of the finer details would have been helpful to evryone. I requested that Dr. Carmona's assistant call or text my husband after the surgery, just to let him know that I was doing fine, but he never received a call or text. I'm not sure what haapened, but maybe there was a miscommunication. Five hours after the surgery concluded, I was lucid enough to ask a nurse to please find my overnight bag so that I could place a call to my husband who was frantically worried and pacing the floor. If you do not have an attending family member, I suggest that you write their name and phone number on a card (complete with country code dialing instructions) so that the Amerimed staff can contact your family. Make this as clear as possible to everyone before the surgery, and maybe it will happen. It seems that this is not a customary practice in Mexico, as it is in the USA. Alternately, you should provide your family member with the same instructions for calling the hospital if necessary. 7. After spending the night in the hospital, Dr. Carmona visited my hospital room to remove the first stage of bandaging. I was very grateful for his professional bed-side manner. He also provided antibiotics and pain management medicine for take-home use which were more than adequate. I spent the remainder of my recovery at my home in Mexico. I followed all of Dr. Carmona's instructions exactly, and my recovery went smoothly. I healed well with minimal bruising and minimal swelling. 8. One week after the surgery, Dr. Carmona removed the remaining bandages and sutures. Although it is early in my recovery, I have enough prior experience to feel confident that my scars will be undetectable with time and proper care. 9. Dr. Carmona's staff members are very nice, and I respect them tremendously for their multilingual abilities. They are the type of ladies that you would be proud to call friends. 10. I am very pleased with my appearance and thankful for the entire team at Shape & Beauty. Due to Dr. Carmona's excellent surgical talent, Shape & Beauty is experiencing rapid growth. As foreigners, it is our duty to be patient and understanding; especially when you are receiving the best medical care at very competitive prices. I take responsibility for the miscommunications that occured and will handle my role more proactively if I decide to have additional surgeries. I would be remiss if I did not include this in my reveiw. As stated in the above caveats: 1. Ask for surgical instruction two weeks prior to surgery via email. 2. Prepare medical staff and family members with communication instructions. Overall assessment: I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr. Marco Antonio Carmona to my friends and family. I could have had cosmetic surgery anywhere, but I chose Dr. Carmona for his excellent reputation and credentials. Frankly, I am more pleased with the results that he achieved than the results that I obtained in the USA with prior cosmetic procedures. Dr. Carmona is a first-class surgeon, and you will not be disappointed.
