I Had a Bad Experience

I had a sliding genioplasy, neck lift and jaw implants. The neck lift left me with a hound dog face so Dr Whittenberg told me I needed a facelift as well. I went back and had that. For three years I have suffered from burning ripping pain under my bottom lip and completely numb bottom teeth which I was told was because he has advanced the chin so much everything needed to stretch. Three years of burning ripping pain and trouble forming words and I found out after seeing another surgeon Dr Whittenberg had placed an implant under my bottom lip on top of the chin which was wide and had a sharp edge. Firstly I was completely surprised because Dr Whittenberg never discussed this with me or even suggested that may be the cause of all my pain and the whole reason I went for a sliding genioplasy was because I didn’t want a chin implant. I asked doctor Whittenberg two times to send my new surgeon my file which he did not do. My new surgeon asked for the file several times and did not get it. I went ahead and had the implant removed. 80% of my pain is now gone! I still have no feeling in my bottom teeth and will need much more surgery to correct the facelift, step off and who knows what we will have to do to correct the witches chin. Over all a very bad experience altogether. Can I give -5 stars? Wish I could.

Healing after implant removal

As the swelling and numbness from the implant removal progresses it is becoming clear that the pain in my lower teeth, chin and gums is permanent. I still feel like my gums are being ripped from my bottom teeth, burning and still difficult to form words or speak for very long without a huge increase in pain. Three years is a very long time to be in such pain! I am so sick of my face hurting so much!!!!

Sorry you need to deal with this.
Does Dr. Wittenberg have any explanation for your situation? Is this pain coming from the jaw work or chin work? From my understanding Dr, Wittenberg uses Gortex strips on all his patients. I'm curious to know what went wrong in your situation?

No explanation, he continues to deny any responsibility or offer any explanation as to what could be the cause of my pain. When I suggested that a nerve was injured he vehemently denied that was possible. After my new surgeon found the implant which I didn’t know was there he suggested we remove it. It was a gortex implant we found no thanks to Dr Whittenberg (who refused to send my File) it was very hard across the wide part on top under my lip. The rest of it was soft. And so hard that at first examination my new surgeon thought it was bone until we did the X-ray.
Now that we have removed the implant I still cannot feel my bottom teeth or gums, still trouble forming words and searing burning pain that feels like my gums are being ripped away from my bottom teeth. I am out of ideas as to what happened and why.

hey brobi, sorry to hear about your situation, I hope you'll recover eventually. So the doctor gave you an implant when you were suppose to get a sliding genioplasty?

He did both. He did the Sliding genioplasy and then he added an implant on top of the slide. So because he advanced my chin bone my opinion too far forward to balance it he placed an implant on the top of the slide which went up to meet my bottom lip. Like an upside down triangle with the wide part sitting in top of the chin bone and the narrow part under my lip.

I’m so sorry this happened! Would you recommend seeing the dr. who removed your implant? If so, I’d love his/her info.

The feeling is slowly retuning to my chin and bottom lip. There was a nerve wrapped around the implant on the right side which got injured during the removal process. Some of the feeling has returned. On occasion now it is still painful as I get jolts of pain which I take as the nerve recovering. I have regained the feeling in the surface of my chin and lip. It is still numb below the surface. On another good note my bottom teeth are feeling less tight and I believe I am starting to get feeling back in them although the gum is still completely without feeling.
