I'm not nearly brave enough to post pictures but I started accutane 2 days ago. I've had mild to moderate acne for nearly my whole life.. it comes and goes. I'll go a couple of months to really mild acne then usually during the change in season, I'd break out. I usually get one or two monster cystic zits. I'd go get a cortisone shot and it'd go away but then another would pop back up. Just recently I've just been getting crazy cystic acne one after another. I'm 35 and just want it to go away so my derm suggested accutane. I've read so many reviews on this site and while generally they're positive, I was scared as hell. But in the grand scheme of things.. you only live once.. and i'd like to live once with a clear face without worrying when my next breakout will happen.
So i started 2 days ago and i swear as soon as i took it 2 hours later i got two new pimples.. 3 medium sized ones by my hair line and two small ones on my nose.. im assuming the purge is happening. I would usually stress about it but for some reason i dont care too much. Maybe because i read about how other people would break out initially too. The side effects are mild. I got a little bit of a headache but not the dry skin. I drink lots of water. I worked out this morning and man did my face get red. Does anyone know if intense workout is not recommended on accutane? Also what about supplements like protein and creatine?
Anyway I gotta trip to thailand in december and i hope to god i dont break out on the trip.. also i gotta give up beer which sucks bad. oh well..
I'll think about posting a picture.. i do have some saved but we'll see..
wish me luck!
oh and thanks for the awesome reviews.. positive and negative. shed so much light.

So far so okay? Im starting to get some dry skin on my face and hands but im moisturizing. The acne that developed is calming except for one on my nose that is now a big whitehead. There is one on my forehead that turned into a painful cyst but now its just a cyst. Its reduced by in size and redness though. havent touched or squeezed anything and im not planning to. I have a dentist appointment tomorrow which should be awesome. I drink tons of water so no dehydrated feeling except in the morning. Oh and also im tired all the time. Ive been fighting through it at the gym. No muscle soreness.. I cant stress enough how much water and generally being hydrated keeps most of the side effects at bay. Also a healthy diet.
Anyway if i think of something more ill post. Ill also think of putting a pic up this Saturday... MAYBE.
Keep fighting the good fight.

Hi, I want to share my tips with you as I have successfully completed my Accutane journey. As you go through the cycle, you will experience dryness (no matter what your dosage is). Accutane dries up your body, so I recommend not working out for a while. Also, stop taking supplements like protein and creatine until the very end of your journey. These might clash with Accutane and cause complications (if they don't, I would still stop taking them)
Drink lots of water (as you're doing already, which is great)
Use moisturiser on your face and body containing SPF. I also recommend applying lip balm because your lips will get very dry and possibly crack too (like mine did). I recommend Carmex or Burts bees, or Aquaphor or if you can't find any of the suggested, then just buy any lipbalm. Don't use Vaseline/petroleum jelly. Or you can. If you want.
Also, use sunscreen/sunblock to protect your skin when being exposed to the sun everyday. Accutane makes your skin VERY sensitive to the sun (whether you have sensitive skin prior to starting Accutane or not). Moisturiser with SPF is not enough.
I would also stop consuming foods that contain Vitamin A, because Accutane contains a lot of Vitamin A already. (I'm not really sure about this, but this was my theory when I was on Accutane).
Wash your face twice a day everyday with non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, soap- free, etc. face wash. Just ask for a gentle face cleanser if you can't find any at your local pharmacy.
Yes, you need to give up beer and alcohol in general.
That's it I guess. Moisturise, lip balm, stay hydrated, decrease consumption of vitamin A, sunscreen, no alcohol, etc.
Good luck! I hope your journey is successful. Just stay positive at all times (don't think about the negative side effects!) as you know that it will feel like hell at the start, don't stress out too much about it!
PS: Don't be afraid to post pictures! We are all family here and we would love to see progress during your cycle :)
