I chose to have my surgeries performed by Dr. Apostolakis in Austin (see review on him below).
The two things that I thought long and hard about having done are both influenced heavily by genetics. Some people are simply blessed with better anatomical structure than others. In my case, the almost 45 degree angle of my neck has always been there and bothered me tremendously. It made me self conscious (more so in the profile view), and had nothing to do with being skinny or being overweight. I often would have a double chin sort of appearance in photos....would always ask people to "hold the camera up and get the downward angle etc etc". It turns out that the angle is mostly affected by the position of one's hyoid bone in their neck. I have a "low hyoid bone". It was comforting to hear this same piece of information from 2 different surgeons during my "research phase" and consultations. So, I was told that I could have fat dissection done on my neck which would improve that angle, but that I would not be an Angelina Jolie with a 90 degree neck....due to the hyoid bone. And, I was told I likely do not have much fat in there, but he (Dr. A) would do what he could to give me the improved look I was seeking. So, this is one of the procedures I had done.
I also chose to move forward with tear trough implants. I have had these eye bags and "tired looking" under eye areas for many many years. Again, much of this is influenced by genetics, but it is also a natural aging process....but appeared greatly sped up in my case with the added hereditary factor. I decided to also have the tear trough implant surgery done to improve, or get rid of, my lower eye bags and tired looking appearance. Dr A. has performed over 1,000 of these procedures. He explained that using the implants has been his approach to lower eye surgery vs the traditional lower blepharoplasty. In the traditional way, the "extra" lower eye fat that seemed to cause the bagginess was removed and the extra skin cut away, all stitched up and done. With tear trough implants, an incision is made in the inside of the lower eyelid. NO fat is removed unless excessive, and a somewhat tear drop shaped, silicone implant, is inserted and placed on the orbital bone with the fat re-draped over it. No stitches required. This creates a "building up" effect on the lower portion of the socket with a very smooth appearance by the use of the natural fat being re-draped over the implant. Thus, the bag is corrected, but without leaving a hollow eye look that sometimes occurs with the traditional lower bleph procedure.

The drains and the head wrap had to stay on only that first night. When I went back in the next morning, Dr. A removed all of that. No real pain, just a bit uncomfortable. Too swollen and numb all over to open mouth more than a bit...only able to have liquids. I was also told that chewing the first few days would use the cheek muscle too much and could cause increased bruising. Soup and protein shakes it is!
