When using a saline nasal spray do you breathe it in or do you squirt in a few drops after a nose job ? I am not clear on how to use the spray knowing you shouldnt be blowing your nose or doing heavy sniffling. I am on day 2 post op.

For post rhinoplasty, I give my patients instructions to initially use a Q tip saturated in peroxide to gently remove dried blood in the nostrils. This can be accomplished by lightly rotating the Q tip and letting the peroxide break the dried blood down. This is very helpful to improve breathing if there is no packing in place. Also, saline spray can be gently sprayed into the nasal passage followed by gentle blowing of the nose. This helps to remove dried blood and improves comfort of breathing after surgery. These are my specific recommendations and may not reflect your surgeons preferences so be sure to check with your surgeon before doing anything.

Personally, I use the saline spray to keep the nasal passages moist and prevent clogging with hardened mucous tissue. I allow a very mild blowing of the nose to clear the passages. Every surgeon has his/her own protocol. Spray gently.All the best,Talmage Raine MD
