4 weeks post op, noticed more drainage than usual and wound separation. Advice? (photos)

Question

I will be 4 weeks post op in two days. I have been having small amounts of drainage which I was told was normal. Over the weekend, I noticed I had a bit more drainage than usual. I then came to find that it appears my wound is separating. I called my surgeons office after hours and they said they will give my doctor the message and I assume hopefully see me tomorrow. I’m freaking out because I was reading about possible implant infection.

I would wait till the office contacts you. Of what I see in the picture doesn't look like anything to panic,but I would make an appointment with your board certified surgeon to assure yourself of what is going on.

Dear nikitaxo,this type of wound is not uncommon after breast lift. It is usually caused by poor blood flow. I would suggest you to consult your plastic surgeon, follow your surgeon's instructions and keep your wound clean and covered. to develop 4 weeks out but you can never be 100% sure.  When the implant is exposed, there is usually a lot of drainage as opposed to more spotting.  Your surgeon knows what is under that wound and you must see him/her to be evaluated and to determine if your implant is involved.  Knowing that the junction of the incision is always a weak link, I always have healthy tissue beneath that, just in case the skin may break down.  If your surgeon does the same thing, there is nothing to worry about.

Thank you for your question. Your incisions look completely fine - I think you can take a deep breath. While your right to be concerned and to be on the lookout for a possible infection, in many patients who undergo the procedure you had done there can be some issues with healing. From your photos, this looks to be very superficial - which means that the deeper tissues are likely fine. I would suggest keeping the area covered and dry, and seeing your Plastic Surgeon for reassurance. Best of luck!
