There has been one study on breast reduction and it’s affect on pulmonary function. The study showed no change after surgery. Hiwevrr you will be so much more comfortable that it may seem that breathing and everything else requiring physical activity will be improved.
I am unaware of any studies that have found a significant difference between the two variables. BMI, not breast size, seems to be the main factor affecting lung function.
Dear kosmicgirl, asthma will not be affected by breast reduction surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.Daniel Barrett, MD
Thanks for writing,Unfortunately these are two different problems. One is intrinsic the the breast itself and the other has to do with the lining of your trache-bronchial tree. The reduction can reduce the weight on your chest wall and therefore make breathing more comfortable. I hope this helps.Stephen M. Breast reduction surgery tends to be one of the most patient pleasing operations we perform. Having said that, bronchial asthma will not be eliminated or improved with the procedure. If you choose to proceed with breast reduction surgery, it will be important that you be medically stable (for example, optimized from the pulmonary standpoint). Best wishes.
Obviously, breast surgery does not affect the bronchi in your lungs. That said, taking weight off your chest, literally, and improving the ability to exercise, is definitely a good thing for an asthmatic patient. Best wishes.
Thank you for your inquiry. Asthma is a condition characterized by hypersensitivity and inflammation of small airways and will be unaffected by a breast reduction.

Individuals usually complain of neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain, bra strap grooving, and chronic rashes beneath the breasts as well as a stooped forward posture. If your symptoms are caused by the weight of your breast compressing your chest when on your back, there may be a degree of relief with breast reduction. On the other hand, intrinsic asthma will not be affected by breast reduction as it is caused by airway constriction due to inflammation and swelling within your lungs.Seek advice from your primary care physician whether it would be worthwhile to undergo this procedure to improve your respiratory symptoms. Best wishes...
