Will I be swallowing bonding material while getting it removed?

I want to get my permanent retainers removed because I'm having trouble with flossing.I'm really concerned about swallowing the material while they shave it?Is there any way it can be done without swallowing it?How toxic is it?!

If you're very concerned about swallowing what's holding the retainer on, your dentist can place a rubber dam on the teeth prior to removing the material. This way, you would be insured that nothing goes down your throat. I would also recommend having a removable retainer made that you would wear only at night so your teeth wouldn't shift. Swallowing bonding material during retainer removal is really not a problem. Your dentist will use a large suction to remove the debris. The bigger problem is that you may experience shifting of your lower teeth when the retainer is removed. I highly discourage you from removing the retainer. Buy a pack of floss threaders to help you floss in these areas or get a waterpick. Your retainer was meant to be a "permanent" fixture.
