I have always had asymmetrical breasts. But recently in May I started having breasts swelling and tenderness so I stopped my pill hoping that would help. That helped some with the swelling and took away the tenderness. Then I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and was put on medication. Since I've been in the meds I feel like my asymetry is worse. Almost like the larger one keeps getting larger and the small, smaller. Is this possible and if I needs these meds, will a surgery even help to fix this?
Answer: Treatment for Asymmetrical Breasts Obviously, without photos or a personal examination, I can only offer general information. If your breasts are asymmetrical in size and/or shape, then that means that you have more or less breast glandular tissue on each side, and that the breast tissue is distributed in abnormal positions on each side. In addition, if this condition seems to be changing, that is a result of changes in your hormonal or endocrine situation. Plastic surgery can certainly make your breasts more even in size and shape and create a very pleasing, feminine appearance, by adjusting the amount and location of your breast tissue. However, it is important to see an appropriate medical doctor first to make sure your hormonal status is normalized. By the way, it is common for birth control medication to result in breast enlargement, and that will subside after stopping the medication. Once you know that your medical status is fine, then it will be fine to proceed with surgery to create the appearance you desire.

Answer: Breast Asymmetry Unfortunately, surgery is likely the only way to treat your breast asymmetry. It sounds like you need to get your hormonal balance corrected first, however. Once you have done that, I would visit with a plastic surgeon in your area. Good luck!

Answer: Asymmetric breasts Breast asymmetry is a common reason to consider having surgery. Almost all women have a small amount of asymmetry naturally, but I've seen many women who have more than a cup size difference between their breasts and different amounts of sagging too. It is important before surgery to make sure your thyroid condition is under control. As bothersome as it is to deal with asymmetry, you don't want to chase a moving target, so postpone surgery until things are stable. It may take augmentation, reduction, or a combination to get the best result, but only an in person consultation will be able to help figure that out. Best wishes.

Answer: Breast Asymmetry Without photos or an in person exam, it's impossible to give you any kind of accurate answer. Breast lift or breast reduction surgery can fix asymmetry, but they do leave scars. That's the trade off. However, given the fact that your breasts seem to be responding to your thyroid medicine, I would advise you to get that figured out first with a visit to your doctor and/or Ob/Gyn. Best, Dr. Nazarian
