I had my surgery 7 months ago. I developed an uneven area on the bottom third of my nose. It is soft to the touch at certain points of the day, but can also get hard at times. I was told my skin is thin. Would this still be swelling or scar tissue.
Answer: Swelling verse scar tissue: Swelling verse scar tissue: swelling is fluid that accumulates in traumatized tissue, or inflamed tissue. Swelling is at its greatest in the early days after rhinoplasty and tapers off considerably after about six weeks. As swelling disappears however scar tissue builds up. It takes 6 to 8 weeks to build up a layer of scar issue which forms under the skin after surgery. so between swelling, of which there could be some and scar issue, at seven months it is more likely to be scar tissue. However there is a third possibility, speaking generically without specific reference to your case, and that is an irregularity of the underlying skeletal framework of cartilage and bone. The nasal bones are in fractured in most cases during rhinoplasty and one or both could drift outward in the months following surgery. This would cause a firm prominence on one side on the upper half of the nose. So if the prominence is firm and located on the upper 1/3 to 1/2 and doesn’t change it is likely bone. If it is firm and doesn’t change on the lower half it is most likely scar tissue. If it is soft and changes with The position in which you sleep, how much salt intake you have, when you are pre-menstrual, etc. that is most likely swelling.

Answer: Rhinoplasty Hello! Thank you for your question. From the photos you provided, I can say that it is too early to make a proper evaluation. The uneven image might be due to the uneven swollen or surgery mistakes. It would be better to wait for 1 year and talk about it with your surgeon. It would be more convenient to decide with face-to-face consultation. Best Regards!

Answer: What you should know about rhinoplasty recovery Thank you for your question and photos. Though much of the swelling is reduced within four months, your nose will be in a phase of recovery for at least one year following your rhinoplasty procedure. It is generally suggested to wait until this entire recovery process is complete to review the final results and determine if any further intervention is necessary. Being that rhinoplasty is one of the most complex of all plastic surgery procedures, it requires experience, skill, and even artistry to achieve an optimal outcome. I recommend scheduling an in-person consultation with an experienced, board-certified facial plastic surgeon, with expertise in rhinoplasty techniques. They will be able to review your surgical history, oversee your recovery process, and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Answer: Swelling after Rhinoplasty. Thank you for your pictures. Swelling may take up to 12 months, in some cases even longer. I suggest you contact your surgeon and find out if he recommends taping at night. After that, the best option is to wait until your nose settles completely and you see the final results. Then, you can consider steroid injections.

Answer: Is this swelling or scar tissue 7 months post rhinoplasty? Hello and thank you for posting. A rhinoplasty can take up to a year or more for the swelling to go down. Scar tissue is forming as it does with all nose jobs but there is definitely still some swelling as well, so maybe it’s a little bit of both. In any case, if it seems different at times it is probably more swelling then anything else. Keep in mind that swelling can be asymmetrical and it can fluctuate, but as time goes byit will get better and you should be happy very happy with your results. Best of luck, Dr. Miguel Mota
