Implant after 20 years of a three unit dental bridge?

In many cases the bone grafting can be completed in one visit.  Following the grafting procedure the surgeon will likely wait 4-6 months before attempting to place a dental implant.  A temporary bridge will be made for you to wear during the healing process.  If the ridge is extremely deficient it may be necessary for two separate grafting procedures to be performed.  Good luck. 

If there is significant bone loss then you can expect multiple grafting procedures to replace the missing bone and soft tissue. You may need more than one surgery. The total treatment time could take up to one year depending on what is under the bridge and how much of your teeth show when you smile.

The type of bone grafting depends on the how much and type of bone defect. A cone beam CT scan can provide necessary diagnosis. Bridges in general have short lifespan, therefore implant can be a longer term solution for you. All depends on how much bone is missing, as well as your smile line: How much do your gums show when you smile? 

Thickness of bone is usually not a challenge, but HEIGHT (vertical) is difficult.  If minor, an onlay graft can be done, where particles are placed and covered by a membrane.  If SEVERE, plan on a block being placed and secured with a screw.  After about 6 months, an implant can be placed, depending on how well the graft "took".
