When I was younger a filling was put there an it fell out and has been rotting since.

Hi: Unfortunately with an X-ray and a photo it is difficult to give you accurate advice.  Generally if the decay is not too far down the root, with a root canal, post and a crown the tooth can be salvaged.Best,Dr. Maddahi

Without seeing you to do an exam, and without xrays, this is a shot in the dark.  It sounds like the only choice (besides doing nothing) is to extract the tooth.  After that, a bridge or dental implant can be done.
