Why does AGA cause mild itching in some cases & does thin curly hair worsen/accelerate miniaturization?

Mild itching during androgenetic alopecia (AGA) can definitely happen, and I’ve seen this in quite a few patients. The itching may be related to inflammation around the hair follicles as the DHT (dihydrotestosterone) starts affecting the follicles. DHT causes miniaturization of hair follicles, and this irritation can lead to mild scalp itching. The itch isn’t always from new hair growth, but rather the underlying changes happening in the scalp.
Itching can also happen during the telogen (resting) or exogen (shedding) phases when hair is naturally being shed. It’s possible that as the follicles go through these cycles, the surrounding scalp tissue becomes slightly irritated, which can lead to that itching sensation.
As for your question about having thin curly hair, having finer hair naturally won’t necessarily make AGA worse or speed up miniaturization, but thinner hair may make the effects of AGA more noticeable sooner. Curly hair can create the illusion of more volume, but as hair thins, even curly hair can appear less dense. The miniaturization process itself is driven by DHT and genetics, but the visual impact of thinning hair can be more pronounced in those with finer hair.
