Should I dissolve chin filler before an implant?

Question

I'm interested in having a chin implant completed, however, I would like to try a dissolvable filler in the chin area beforehand to get a bit of an idea of how it may possibly look? My thoughts being it's a lot less invasive way of seeing a mildly comparable result. So long as the filler is dissolved before I have an implant is there any reason this would affect being able to have an implant in the future? Would it stretch my skin or affect the pocket in which the implant would be placed?

Your line of thinking has a lot of value
 and would allow you to test a temporary treatment before committing to the long term change. You would need to use an injectable filler based on hyaluronic acid as they are the only ones which can be dissolved. Hydroxyapatite based filler is also used for chin augmentation but cannot be dissolved.

Ideally, the filler should be dissolved before inserting the implant to allow better evaluation of the treatment plan for surgery. Having the injectable filler does not tend to affect the pocket or produce irreversible stretching of the skin.

Thank you for your question. It is quite common for patients to "try out" chin augmentation with fillers before moving to a more permanent surgical correction. Once you are ready for surgery, you should make sure all of your filler is gone. This can occur naturally over time as your body breaks it down or with injections of an enzyme to dissolve the filler right away. By eliminating the filler, you will ensure the results of your chin implant produce the correct amount of projection for facial balance and harmony. Make sure you are working with an experienced, board-certified facial plastic surgeon to ensure an optimal outcome from both of your procedures.

It is not at all uncommon for a patient to have a filler placed in the chin prior to having a chin implant.  If you decided to have a chin implant after the filler, you could either wait for the filler to dissolve by itself or have it dissolved if it is a hyaluronic acid filler.  If you had a consult for the chin implant before the filler and determined which implant was going to be used, you could also just leave the filler and have the implant.  The filler then would just gradually dissolve.
