Can I tattoo over my skin grafts on leg?

Question

I had 2 big incisions on my left leg (one inside, one outside) due to compartment syndrome surgery after being in an accident. Skin from my thigh was used to close the incisions. Can I get a tattoo on leg and over the skin graft to hide?

Thank you for your question in regards to laser tattoo removal. While it is typically possible to tattoo over a skin graft, it may not be suggested. Due to the texture and scaring of your skin the tattoo may not come out as desired. To be sure what is best for you, see two or more board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have treatment. Also speak to a reputable tattoo artist as well. I hope this helps.

Thank you for the interesting question. I know it is not easy to recover from such a traumatic event and having scarring from from skin grafting can be an unwanted reminder. The exact thickness of the skin graft will determine whether or not tattooing will be safe/possible. Discuss this with your surgeon before proceeding. Sometimes we use exceedingly thin grafts to cover an area, whereas other times we use thicker grafts which would be more amenable to tattooing. Your tattoo artist may not be familiar with the grafting process so please, please discuss with the surgeon first and inquire about graft thickness. I have also seen good results with fat grafting below a healed graft to provide some volume and help the appearance of the skin. This may be another option for you.
