I have a black mole on my upper lip. It has lot of hairs growing over it. I would like to get laser hair removal done on my mole. Will it change the colour and size of my mole?
Answer: Laser Hair Removal Thank you for your question in regards to laser hair removal. It is never recommended to laser over a mole. Doing so can result in change of color, shape, size and texture. This would cause more concerns if there was an underlying issue with the mole itself. To be sure what is best for you, see two or more board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have treatment. I hope this helps.

Answer: Moles should not be treated with laser Hello, we do not advise ever going over a mole with a laser. For one the laser is attracted to melanin which can be absorbed by the mole instead of the hair. We also don't want to make any changes to a mole that has not been biopsied. I suggest seeing a dermatologist if the mole is bothering you so they can discuss other options with you. Good luck!

Answer: LHR over a dark mole Laser Hair removal over a dark mole is never recommended. The laser is attracted to melanin, or pigment, which will cause all the energy to absorbed by the mole. This could cause the mole to become burned and then loose pigmentation. The dangers in this is that if the cells of the mole ever change a Dermatologist would be unable to see it. I recommend having the mole checked to make sure it is benign and then have it removed prior to doing LHR over the area.

Answer: Laser hair removal Hair growing from a mole on lip is best treated with removal of the mole. Laser hair removal of a mole may be less successful as the mole itself will absorb away lot of the energy which means your hair follicle is less likely to be targeted. You may notice some benefit however there is a risk that the hair can grow back anytime. Hope this helps!Johnson C. Lee, MD Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

Answer: Laser hair removal Hi thank you for your question. No, it will not change the color or size of your mole. Although because there is melanin in the mole it may be more sensitive in that area and may need more treatments. Hope this helps. LOA- Lake Oswego Vein & Aesthetic
