Umbilical Hernia from Liposuction? (photo)

      It would be difficult to create an umbilical hernia from liposuction.  If the surgeon is not a general surgeon and is not comfortable fixing this, then find someone else to fix this.  I must say that sometimes an umbilical stalk distortion can be mistaken for a hernia, which would be a palpable abdominal wall defect.  A physical exam can easily sort this out.

Liposuction performed thru the belly button can sometimes cause distortion of the shape of belly button. correction of which will require surgery as suggested by your doctor. from the pics you had posted it doesnt look like an umbililcal hernia. I would seek another consultation to make sure this is a hernia and not merely distortion.

While no one should comment on the specifics of your case without seeing you personally, it seems to me very unlikely that liposuction would cause a hernia in the belly button area.

Thank you for the question and the photos. It would difficult to comment on your question and photos without direct examination. This could be an unrecognized hernia or simply fat necrosis. You may want to consider a second opinion. In my practice if the patient has an umbilical hernia, I repair it during the surgery.

Very hard to believe lipo via the umbilicus would cause a hernia, unless there was an underlying undetected one. Sorry but you need to see a general surgeon who does hernia repairs.

 Direct physical elimination will be necessary to determine whether you have an umbilical hernia or postoperative distortion of the umbilicus. Either way, surgical intervention can be helpful. Many plastic surgeons are also trained and board certified general surgeons who will feel comfortable handling either scenario.

It is highly unlikely that liposuction would cause an umbilical hernia. Sure,surgeons use a small skin access incision in the umbilical area, but the surgeon would have had to perforate your umbilical stalk of fascia for you to develop a hernia after the liposuction.  Most likely if you have an umbilical hernia, you had it before.  Best to see a surgeon.
